Malawi Lake Cichlid Tank Sand?
What sand should I use for my future Malawi Lake Cichlid tank? I have gravel now but it's too coarse, so I'll replace the gravel that isn't supporting rocks with sand. My tank is 40 gallons.
I need sand (from Petco or Petsmart, Lowe's or Home Depot, etc.) that will raise the pH to 8.0-8.2 and then buffer it, but I'm not sure what to pick.
If you could find a link or something or the right sand name that would be available at any chain store, please let me know- I'm overwhelmed with the options and don't know the one that will work best.
There are no sands that I know of that act as a permanant buffering agent. If I were in your position I would find a suitable sand that you need for your tank, and then use actual buffering chemicals to keep your water's PH where you want it. This is a much better solution. Any sand from Lowe's or Home Depot which is labeled Play Sand, is safe.
Just make sure to avoid "builder's sand", or any sand with additives.
